Classic Films on DVD in 2003

(Most of the following was adapted from a series of Classic Movies Forum posts by regular poster Baron von Tralfaz, who seems to have a secret source of information about everything to do with classic films. Luckily for us.)

Lots of great stuff arrived on DVD in 2002, and as DVD matures, more classics are being made available in the format, with the various companies digging deeper into their vaults.

Classics are being defined here as films originally released to theaters prior to 1970 (with the exception of one Akira Kurosawa film). I'm only going to list titles that I've seen definite announcements for 2003 DVD release in North America, either in press releases from the home video companies themselves, or from postings on other forums from legit representatives from these companies. There are other classic titles being rumored for release (such as King Kong, Where Eagles Dare, and House Of Wax from Warner Bros., Miracle Of Morgan's Creek, Targets, and Gunfight At The O.K. Corral from Paramount, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea and Sleeping Beauty from Disney, etc) in 2003, but here I'm going to stick to the confirmed info, rather than speculation.

As always, the best laid plans are subject to change, so there is always a chance some of these may end up being cancelled or delayed by their producers. As of this moment, it looks like we'll be seeing the following DVDS from the following companies (those that include hyperlinks are available now):

Anchor Bay:
I'm Alright Jack
The Smallest Show On Earth
Two-Way Stretch
Heavens Above
Hoffman
Carlton-Browne Of The F.O. (only available in a DVD box set collecting the above 5 Peter Sellers films)

Artisan:
Pursued
Flame Of The Barbary Coast
Lady Takes A Chance
Copacabana
The Magic Christian

Buena Vista (Disney):
The Absent-Minded Professor
The Moon-Spinners

Columbia:
In A Lonely Place
The Awful Truth
You Can't Take It With You
Talk Of The Town
Once Upon A Time (Cary Grant and the dancing caterpillar)
Born Free
Dead Reckoning
Sirocco
The Harder They Fall
The Devil At 4 O'clock
Stop! Look! Laugh! (Three Stooges)
Pennies From Heaven (Bing Crosby version)

Columbia Tristar:
The Howards Of Virginia

Criterion:
Trouble In Paradise
The Killers (both the 1946 & 1964 versions, together in one package)
Band Of Outsiders
Pepe le Moko
Beauty & The Beast (1946-French - remastered version)

Criterion will release these in late April:
Fellini's The White Shiek
The Adventures Of Antoine Doinel (a 5-DVD set of Truffaut films: The 400 Blows, Stolen Kisses, Bed & Board, Love On The Run, plus the short film Antoine & Colette)

Disney:
Treasure Island (April 29th)
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea 2-disc special edition (May 15th)

Fox:
Sunrise (January)
My Friend Flicka (March)
Journey To The Center Of The Earth (March)
The Song Of Bernadette (June)
The Blue Max (May)
The Desert Fox (May)
Sink The Bismark (May)
The Enemy Below (May)
13 Rue Madeleine (May)
Heaven Knows Mr. Allison (May)

The last six World War II-themed Fox classics have all been given a street date of May 20. They will all be presented in their proper theatrical ratios (meaning that the Cinemascope films will be properly letterboxed, thank goodness), will include their original theatrical trailers, and at least some of them will have Movietone News clips of real-life, related WWII incidents. Each will have a suggested retail price of $14.95.
My Darling Clementine
Viva Zapata

Official Fox Classics DVDs ("special editions" packed with extra stuff besides the movie), including each title's proposed release date. This line of DVDs began in January with three titles (All About Eve, How Green Was My Valley and Gentleman's Agreement), and thereafter, one release a month (hence the dates listed below). The other classic-era Fox films listed above are also on the way, but will likely be smaller-scale DVD presentations with fewer extras... perhaps only the trailers as extras on those:
How Green Was My Valley (Available Now)
All About Eve (Available Now)
Gentleman's Agreement (Available Now)
An Affair To Remember (February 4th)
The Day The Earth Stood Still (March 4th)
The Ghost And Mrs. Muir (April 1st)
Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing (May 6th)

The Mark Of Zorro (1940) (October 7th)
Laura (November 4th)
The Ox-Bow Incident (December 2nd)
Plus F.W. Murnau's silent classic, Sunrise (1927), if one buys any three of the above titles and mails in the "proof-of-purchase" seals from each, plus the sales receipt(s) and order form included in each DVD package.

On April 1st, Universal will unveil the DVD edition of the Charade remake from last Fall, The Truth About Charlie. No big deal in and of itself, except that it will be a 2-disc set, containing a nice print of the original Cary Grant/Audrey Hepburn Charade from 1963 in its entirety. The 1963 Charade was given an excellent release on DVD a couple of years ago by Criterion (which has an ongoing licensing agreement with Universal), but that DVD has gone out-of-print. Several public domain outfits have released Charade on DVD over the years, but the Criterion version, or this Universal re-release bundled with The Truth About Charlie, are the ones for fans to seek out. Universal did a similar thing a year or so ago, with the film Meet Joe Black; along with that modern movie, they included the original film version of the tale, Death Takes A Holiday (1934), in its entirety, as a supplemental "extra" on the Meet Joe Black "ULTIMATE EDITION" DVD.

Coming to DVD on May 6th from Universal:

And more to come...

Final note: Here's a link to an interesting article posted on the excellent "Divas" site, regarding the poor availability of classic era movies on DVD, why studios aren't doing very much with classic titles in the format, and what could be done to correct the situation: http://www.divasthesite.com/dvd.htm

Also, there's an excellent column from reviewer Barrie Maxwell on The Digital Bits which offers even more information about upcoming DVD releases. Barrie writes a regular column on that subject for The Digital Bits. We've also linked to a number of his classic reviews from DVDVerdict on various Classic Movies tribute articles.
