Whether or not you happen to be a fan of the Winter Olympics, you'll have a hard time avoiding mention of the games which take place beginning February 11, 2006 in Turin, Italy. (Visit the new Official Site.) But if you are in danger of experiencing Figure Skating Fatigue or Luge Overload, you can always slip a tape into the VCR. And just to stay in the spirit of the thing, you can choose from the following list of movies with related themes (with links to help you purchase them if you'd like):
Citizen Kane (1941) Why is this film listed here? It's the sled, of course! Okay, the rest of these make a lot more sense...
Cool Runnings (1993) A Disney comedy based on the true story of the Jamaican bobsled team which competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. One of John Candy's funnier performances.
The Cutting Edge (1992) Moira Kelly stars as an ice skater who loses her chance to win in the 1988 Winter Olympics, then gets paired with a former hockey player (D.B. Sweeney) to try again. Critics called it "The Taming of the Shrew" on ice.
Downhill Racer (1969) Robert Redford joins the U.S. Olympic ski team. Lots of great downhill action amidst the pathos.
The Heroes of Telemark (1965) This World War II film starring Kirk Douglas and set in Norway includes exciting skiing sequences.
Ice Castles (1978) Pretty Lynn-Holly Johnson is a real figure skater. She didn't make it to the Olympic level, but she gives a strong performance in her film debut. Robby Benson co-stars.
Ice Follies of 1939 (1939) Jimmy Stewart and Joan Crawford are a skating team, if you can believe that. Shipstad and Johnson's Ice Follies show is the real star, though. Unfortunately out of print.
The Mighty Ducks (1992) Another Disney movie, the first of three in the series, starring Emilio Estevez as the coach of a loser kids' hockey team that wins in the end, a la "Bad News Bears." Harmless fun, with plenty of skating scenes.
Miracle on Ice (1981) Karl Malden stars as Herb Brooks in this TV-movie recreation of the overmatched U.S. hockey team's victory over the Soviets at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY. (The recent remake isn't bad, either.)
Mystery, Alaska (1999) Not exactly old enough to be a classic yet, and many critics didn't exactly rave about it, but if you're a hockey fan, you'll love the spirit of The Saturday Game.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) James Bond (George Lazenby, co-starring with Diana Rigg) follows bad guy Blofeld to a remote alpine institute in Switzerland, where skiing and shooting and other winter activities take place.
One in a Million (1936) It was the first film for Sonja Henie, The First Lady of the Ice, who won the world figure skating championship 11 years in a row, and three successive Olympic Golds.
Slap Shot (1977) As far as you could get from Olympic hockey, maybe, but it's worth it just to see Paul Newman as a beat-up minor league player-coach.
