The Black Experience in Hollywood
Recommended Web Sites on African-Americans and Hollywood
- African-American Classic Videos - The classic movies and documentaries section of African American Videos, a site specializing in videos "by, for and about Black folks."
- African-American History Hotlinks - Though not specifically about movies, this is an excellent annotated list of Web sites on African-American history. This site also includes an article about the 1949 film, Lost Boundaries.
African Americans in the Movies - A Bibliography of Materials in the UC Berkeley Moffitt Library.
- Articles and Reviews from "Cineaste Magazine" - A collection of articles from the well-known film magazine focusing on race and film.
- The Black Film Center/Archive - Indiana University's excellent resource includes a substantial list of film-related Internet resources on the subject of African-Americans in film. While many of the links may be outdated, there are still some gems to be found.
- Oscar Micheaux - Lots of information there about the pioneering African-American filmmaker from South Dakota.
- Midnight Ramble: The Negro in Early Hollywood - Another fine, graphically-sophisticated effort from Michael Mills, covering the "Race Movies" period from WWI through the 1940s.
- New York Times New! - "How The Movies Made a President." An interesting review of the history of movies and politics in America, culminating with the election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the U.S.
- Separate Cinema - Founded in 1976, Separate Cinema has an archive of over 10,000 movie posters, lobby cards, stills and "assorted ephemera" related to historic black cinema, and maintains a traveling poster exhibit and a film and celebrity lecture series.
