The 81st Academy Awards

Welcome to the annual Classic Movies Salute to Oscar®. For classic movie fans, this is one event that ties the past to the present. Though we may not admit to a love for many of the new films, most of us were in front of the TV set on Sunday, February 22, 2009, when the envelopes were opened.

The 81st Oscar Awards ceremony was very entertaining, with Hugh Jackman turning in a creditable performance as host, including a cute opening number with "homemade" tributes to the various nominated films. Slumdog Millionaire swept most of the awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and many of the post-production awards. Sean Penn beat out favorite Mickey Rourke for Best Actor, while Kate Winslet won for Best Actress.

There are lots of places on the Web where you can find more Oscar info -- including this site. For example, do you know what films swept the Oscars? Can you descramble anagrams for these best pictures and famous performers? Warm up with these tests of your film knowledge from the Classic Movies feature archives, then move on to the following collection of Oscar tributes, reviews, and predictions, beginning with the official site.

Not interested in this year's awards? Would you rather see a list of winners from the first three decades or so? Start with the winners of the major awards from 1927 to 1939, then move on to the 1940s, the 1950s, and the 1960s.
