After choosing the 100 Greatest Films, the 100 Greatest Stars, and the 100 Greatest Comedies during the past three years (all ranked in order), the American Film Institute is now prepared to choose the 100 Greatest Thrills.
Ballots have been distributed to a whole bunch of movie people, and the three-hour TV show will be broadcast on Tuesday, June 12th. This one may be a tad more controversial, since in addition to the usual differences of opinion about which movies are the best, there is also the issue of exactly what fits into this category. While using the word "thrills" in the title, the AFI is a little less specific in their actual description of the category, using terms like "heart-pounding movies" and "adrenaline-inducing impact." So we can't assume that this category is only intended to include "thrillers" or "adventure" films. The only way to truly understand what they're talking about is to read the list of 400. I will refrain from making any comments at this point. Aside from the fact that, at first glance, there appear to be a few missing films, such as Key Largo, Mutiny on the Bounty, and Midnight Lace. Those are just off the top of my head, quite literally. I know you can think of more.
Here's the list. There's also a printable version if you'd like to have that for reference. It's very long, as you can imagine, so be sure you have lots of paper in your printer.
Voting in our informal poll to determine what films WE think should be on the final list is now closed. It was strictly unofficial, of course. I didn't get a vote in this thing (once again), either.
Here are the results. My original intention was to present the top 50 vote getters, but there were 30 films tied for 41st with 3 votes each, so I'm listing them all, in alphabetical order. I don't know if Rear Window will actually be the #1 film (it was a strong favorite among our voters), but I'd say the odds are pretty good that a Hitchcock film will finish first. (And it did; see below.)

And the Winners Are...
Here's the final AFI 100 Thrills list. You may note a few classic thrillers that somehow didn't get included, such as Sorry, Wrong Number, The African Queen, and Gunga Din, which classic fans might have included rather than Speed, Blue Velvet, or Fatal Attraction. But at least Hitchcock is well represented, and there are even one or two from the early days.
