AFI's 100 Years... 100 Passions

The American Film Institute has spoken once again, choosing the 100 most romantic films of all time in their 100 Years... 100 Passions TV show, broadcast on Tuesday, June 11. After publishing a list of 400 romantic films, they asked a panel of 1,800 experts to vote on them and choose the 100 best. Here were their criteria:

CasablancaFEATURE-LENGTH FICTION FILM - Narrative format, typically over 60 minutes in length.

AMERICAN FILM - English language film with significant creative and/or production elements from the United States.

LOVE STORY - Regardless of genre, a romantic bond between two or more characters, whose actions and/or intentions provide the heart of the films narrative.

LEGACY - Films whose "passions" have enriched Americas film and cultural heritage while continuing to inspire contemporary artists and audiences.

Here's the complete list of the nominees. There's also a printable version if you'd like to have that for reference. It's very long, as you can imagine, so be sure you have lots of paper in your printer.

Some of the films that were missing included:

The Adventures Of Robin Hood

Arizona Dream

The Band Wagon

Dodsworth

Flying Down To Rio

Follow The Fleet

Here Comes Mr. Jordan

High Sierra

His Kind Of Woman

Holiday Affair

The Horse Whisperer

How To Steal A Million

In A Lonely Place

Keeper Of The Flame

The Mortal Storm

Penny Serenade

Rachel and the Stranger

River Of No Return

Robin Hood, Prince Of Thieves

Shall We Dance

They Drive By Night

To Each His Own

Without Love

Many of these films were suggested by members of the Classic Movies Forum.

Instead of a poll to determine what your 100 favorites are, this year I chose what I thought were ten pre-60s films that were likely to show up on the final list and asked you to vote for the one you think most deserves to be Number One -- not which one you think will win, mind you (or which is your personal favorite, which is something else entirely), but which one you think is most deserving of the honor.

How'd We Do?

Well, the results are mixed. Aside from The Quiet Man, which I suspect was a case of ballot-box stuffing that unfortunately can't be prevented with the poll format we use, we did pretty well with the #1 and #2 choices, Casablanca and Gone With the Wind. Our 5th choice, Roman Holiday, came in 4th. I left the #3 choice, West Side Story, and #5, An Affair to Remember, off my list of poll choices completely (mea culpa). Our 4th, 6th, and 7th choices were not in the top 10, and the rest got only a smattering of votes. It was a pleasant surprise to see City Lights finish 10th. But classic film fans hated to see Moonstruck, Love Story, and Ghost finishing higher than Now, Voyager, The Lady Eve, and The Philadelphia Story! Okay, here's the final list:
