(Updated to include results.)
In the latest of its series of yearly spectaculars, the American Film Institute (AFI) broadcast its "AFI's 10 Top 10" program -- a listing of the 10 best films in 10 different genres -- in a three-hour television event on CBS on June 17, 2008 at 8:00 ET.
The ten genres celebrated included:
Animation
Romantic Comedies
Westerns
Sports
Mysteries
Fantasy
Science Fiction
Gangster
Courtroom Dramas
Epics
At first glance, it's interesting that there was no category for musicals, and there are separate categories for Fantasy and for Science Fiction. Both probably have a lot to do with the fact that most of the top boxoffice films in recent years have been sci-fi or fantasy, and few musicals are being made these days. There is also no category for Comedies, but since the AFI already covered that one a few years ago (as well as the top 100 songs, to be fair), they probably came up with more specific categories in order to include some films that may not have been highlighted in the past. In that case, we would have liked to have seen a film noir category.
There were 400 nominees, chosen by the AFI. For the complete list, visit the AFI site. You will need to register in order to see it this year.
Movie fans can visit http://www.AFI.com to debate the list and make their case for what are the greatest movies in each genre and why. Additionally, they can visit http://www.youtube.com/AFI to not only view clips of Hollywood's hottest stars talking about their favorite movies, but also to post their own video replies.
