The American Film Institute Greatest 100 Films - Part II

American Film Institute

#34 - #66

34. To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)
A wonderful film, and one of only two on this list to deal in any direct way with racial issues.
Buy this movie!

35. *It Happened One Night (1934)
One of the few pictures to sweep the four major Academy Awards; the combination of Gable and Colbert, directed by Capra, is a winner.
Buy this movie!

36. *Midnight Cowboy (1969)
A powerful, groundbreaking film, with two remarkable performances by Hoffman and Voight. The only film on this list that was once rated "X," it still won three Oscars.
Buy this movie!

37. The Best Years Of Our Lives (1946)
William Wyler's great story of returning WWII veterans won seven Oscars, including Best Picture.
Buy this movie!

38. *Double Indemnity (1944)
The only appearance by Barbara Stanwyck on this list. Is there no justice?
Buy this movie!

39. Doctor Zhivago (1965)
One of the most romantic epic films ever made.
Buy this movie!

40. North By Northwest (1959)
Voted #14 all-time by the IMDb voters, but only 40th on this list, NNW has the famous crop-duster scene which people always remember when they think of Hitchcock and Cary Grant.
Buy this movie!

41. *West Side Story (1961)
It redefined musicals forever, and Natalie Wood was so gorgeous in the lead that you overlooked the fact that she wasn't Puerto Rican and didn't sing.
Buy this movie!

42. *Rear Window (1954)
Considered by some to be Hitchcock's most polished film (ranked 10th in the IMDb poll), it stars the beautiful Grace Kelly and Jimmy Stewart at the top of his form.
Buy this movie!

43. *King Kong (1933)
Sixty-five years later they still haven't made a giant monster with any more personality than Kong.
Buy this movie!

44. Birth Of A Nation (1915)
Undoubtedly of great historical significance, but ask yourself this: Does it seem right to choose this one film to represent all filmmaking previous to 1925?
Buy this movie!

45. A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
Brando's third film in the Top 50 is one of his best performances.
Buy this movie!

46. A Clockwork Orange (1971)
We thought the future couldn't possibly be this bad, could it? Later films painted an even bleaker picture, but this one led the way.
Buy this movie!

47. *Taxi Driver (1976)
Scorsese's haunting masterpiece made De Niro a star and gave us a hint of what Jodi Foster would someday become.
Buy this movie!

48. *Jaws (1975)
Though an easy target for satire, this film did exactly what it set out to do. It made people afraid to go back in the water!
Buy this movie!

49. Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (1937)
The top-rated Disney cartoon is only #49. Does that strike anybody as odd? Anybody who grew up with Disney films, that is?
Buy this movie!

50. *Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969)
This film was once voted the greatest movie of all time by a dozen of my friends, probably because it was the least offensive movie on a rather eclectic list that consisted of everybody's two favorites. The only Western other than High Noon to make the top fifty.
Buy this movie!

51. *The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Great cast, wonderful story, lots of awards. The only film in which Cary and Jimmy appeared together. Had to be included.
Buy this movie!

52. *From Here To Eternity (1953)
Won eight major Oscars, including a Best Supporting Actor award for Frank Sinatra, his only Oscar other than the Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
Buy this movie!

53. Amadeus (1984)
An entertaining film, but a surprising choice for a Top 100 list, in my opinion, and another one that's past the 1980 deadline.
Buy this movie!

54. All Quiet On The Western Front (1930)
I hope everybody had a chance to see, and to tape, the restored version that recently premiered on AMC. An amazing achievement for its time.
Buy this movie!

55. *The Sound Of Music (1965)
While not one of my personal favorites, this film has so many fans that it's inconcievable that it would end up 55th on this list. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the poll.
Buy this movie!

56. *M*A*S*H (1970)
Although the TV show was one of the best series ever, this single film is still better.
Buy this movie!

57. The Third Man (1949)
Orson Welles' only other appearance on this list after capturing the top spot.
Buy this movie!

58. *Fantasia (1940)
So far ahead of its time that there are still people who don't get it. Should have been ranked higher, in my view.
Buy this movie!

59. *Rebel Without A Cause (1955)
Have there ever been three people in one movie who died more tragically than these kids? A powerful and prophetic film.
Buy this movie!

60. *Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)
Spielberg and Harrison Ford are a box office combination that can't be beat. It's also a lot of fun.
Buy this movie!

61. *Vertigo (1958)
The restored version has finally allowed a new generation to see Hitchcock's dark story for what it is -- not a thriller so much as a story about obsession and guilt told in a carefully stylized manner.
Buy this movie!

62. *Tootsie (1982)
Another one that I was tempted to make an exception for, if only for the sake of Hoffman's triumphant sexual transformation, but rules are rules. (Update: Now that the film is more than 20 years old, it seems like a much better choice.)
Buy this movie!

63. Stagecoach (1939)
A trailblazing achievement for John Ford, introducing the "serious" western and making John Wayne a star.
Buy this movie!

64. *Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977)
One of my favorite sci-fi films of all time because of its humane, hopeful quality. I'm very happy that it made the list at all, and it probably wouldn't have if anybody besides Spielberg had made it.
Buy this movie!

65. *Silence Of The Lambs (1991)
Great entertainment with first-rate performances, but it's still too recent a film, and not particularly uplifting.
Buy this movie!

66. Network (1976)
A strong statement at the time, but it seemed to have been forgotten. Perhaps this will revive interest.
