Jim Johnson says that his Judy Garland Database, an enormous and great-looking site which holds one of our "Best of the Net" awards, is about Judy, not about Jim Johnson. So here's some information about Jim: He's a former "flower child" who lives in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering, designs electronic equipment for an engineering company, and really knows what he's talking about when it comes to the Internet (unlike some of us).
If you polled the rest of the people listed on this page, I think you might find general agreement that Michael Mills, a "semi-retired" engineer from Santa Cruz, California, has designed some of the best-looking classic movie sites on the Web -- if not some of the best sites, period -- with some of the most fascinating content. Gathered together under the umbrella of Modern Times, they include the flagship site, Palace Theater Classic Films; The Great B Movies; Midnight Ramble, about the black experience in early Hollywood; Ball of Fire, a tribute to Barbara Stanwyck; Rico's End, the only Edward G. Robinson site I'm aware of; and Screwball Comedy. A labor of love, his sites are strictly non-commercial, and he does not sell advertising. As an advertising guy, I can guarantee he gets calls!
Doug Stickney has assembled one of the most amazing collections of classic and modern actress photos on the Web, and continues to add to his collection regularly. He began with a tribute to Lizabeth Scott (left) in November, 1995 and eventually created the site called Doug Stickney's Silver Screen Siren Website. It's a great place for people who can't get enough of Marilyn, Audrey, and Viven. An engineer from Southern California, Doug originally learned html specifically so he could create the Lizabeth Scott tribute.
Like most of the people listed on this page, Julie Stowe fell in love with the classics at an early age, in her case when she first saw Casablanca. A self-taught airbrush artist, she has filled her Web site with her own wonderful graphic touches, including the portrait of Fred shown here. She got into computers a couple of years ago, and the result was her Ravin' Maven Web site, currently including tributes to Fred Astaire and William Powell, among many others.
