A Tribute to Eli Wallach

Eli Wallach

One of the greatest character actors in Hollywood, Eli Wallach continues to appear in films at the age of 90.

Born on December 7th, 1915 in Brooklyn, Wallach graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, then returned to New York to train at the Actors Studio and the Neighbourhood Playhouse. He began appearing on Broadway in the mid-40s, and won a Tony Award in 1951 for his role in The Rose Tattoo, by Tennesse Williams.

He first appeared on film in Baby Doll (1956), which was just a warmup to his later iconic roles in The Magnificent Seven (1960) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1967). While Wallach has great range, he has always been at his best when playing men of dubious character, usually with a wryly humorous twist.

Other memorable appearances during this period include The Misfits (1961), How the West Was Won (1962), The Victors (1963), The Moon-Spinners (1964), Lord Jim (1965), and How to Steal a Million (1966).

Later film appearances included The Executioner's Song (1982), Tough Guys (1986), Nuts (1987), The Two Jakes (1990), The Godfather: Part III (1990), Vendetta: Secrets of a Mafia Bride (1991), Teamster Boss: The Jackie Presser Story (1992), Naked City: Justice with a Bullet (1998), Keeping the Faith (2000), Mystic River (2003), King of the Corner (2004), for which he won a Newport Film Festival Jury Award as Best Actor, and, most recently, he was cast as Noah Dietrich (Howard Hughes' CEO) in The Hoax, based on the true story of author Clifford Irving (played by Richard Gere), who sold a phony biography of Howard Hughes to a publisher. He was twice nominated for Emmy Awards for Supporting Actor for his TV work, and won once, for Poppies Are Also Flowers (1966).

We'd like to wish Eli Wallach a happy 90th birthday with this tribute, and hope that we see many more excellent performances from him in the years to come!
