A Tribute to Susan Hayward

Susan Hayward

When an aspiring model named Edythe Marrener from Brooklyn, New York travelled to Hollywood along with hundreds of other girls to audition for the part of Scarlett O'Hara, little did she know that ten years later, her name changed to Susan Hayward, she would receive the first of five Oscar nominations and become one of the top stars in Hollywood. (She didn't get that part, by the way.)

Her movie career began in 1937 when she was cast in Hollywood Hotel. It wasn't until 1939 that she began to get some meatier roles, in films such as Beau Geste (1939), Among the Living (1941), Reap the Wild Wind (1942), and The Forest Rangers (1942). The roles got better with Jack London (1943), And Now Tomorrow (1944) and Deadline at Dawn (1946).

Finally Susan got the first of those five Oscar nods, for Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman (1947). She was nominated again for My Foolish Heart (1949) and again in 1953 for With a Song in My Heart (1952), still without a win. She was excellent in The President's Lady (1953) and then was nominated for her fourth acting Oscar for I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955). In 1958, in another performance as a troubled woman, she played California killer Barbara Graham in I Want to Live! (1958), and finally got an Oscar win. The performance is generally considered to be her best, and one of the strongest female performances of all time.

1972 marked Susan's final on-screen performance. She was stricken with cancer, and died on March 14, 1975, at the age of 56. Many attribute her illness to her appearance in The Conqueror in 1956, filmed on location in an area contaminated by nuclear testing - though she was also a two-pack-a-day smoker. (Many of the cast and crew, including John Wayne, Agnes Moorehead, John Hoyt, and director Dick Powell, also died of cancer.)

This tribute is written to celebrate what would have been Susan Hayward's 90th or 91st birthday, depending on which biographies you read. She was a fighter her whole life, and many of her roles, as tough, independent women, reflect that attitude. We can only wonder what sorts of great performances she had yet to give when she was taken from us so early.
