Q. What was really burned in order to shoot the fire scene in "GWTW"?
A. A collection of old sets on the studio backlot was burned (including the "Great Gate" from "King Kong"). It was the first scene to be shot, in December of 1938, at a cost of more than $25,000, and the part of Scarlett O'Hara had not yet been cast. Hundreds of residents of Culver City called the authorities because they thought that MGM studios itself was on fire! The shooting required seven Technicolor cameras, all that were in existence at the time in Hollywood. Standing by were 10 Los Angeles fire trucks, 50 firefighters, and 200 studio helpers. 15,000 gallons of water in three tanks were required to put out the fire after it was over.
