Q. Is it true that DeNiro replaced Pacino in "Bang the Drum Slowly" so that Al could play Michael Corleone?
A. Yes. Al Pacino was originally cast in the lead in "Bang the Drum Slowly," but was replaced by Robert DeNiro, which allowed Pacino to take the part of Michael Corleone in "The Godfather" (for which DeNiro had read). This, in turn, made it possible for DeNiro to be later cast as young Vito in "The Godfather Part II." The acclaimed baseball film also proved to be a good showcase for DeNiro's talents. However, he had to give up the part he was originally supposed to play in the first "Godfather" film: Paulie Gatto!
