Q. Was George Raft originally supposed to play Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon (1941)?
A. To his regret, Raft turned down the part because he felt it was not "an important picture." He exercised a clause in his contract that said he did not have to work on remakes. The Maltese Falcon had already been filmed twice previously, in 1931 and 1936, but not by John Huston, who cast Bogart in the lead role and made it a hit.
