Q. Were there any alternate endings written or filmed for Casablanca"?

A. Although they never actually filmed any alternate endings, the script went through many changes right up until the last minute. The original script had an upbeat ending, and when they wrote a somewhat "darker" ending, it didn't test well. They discussed the possibility of Rick leaving with Ilsa, but decided it wouldn't go over well with the censors, since Ilsa was married to Victor Laszlo. They even experimented with having Laszlo killed at the airport, so that Ilsa would be free to be with Rick, but rejected that. Although the very last scene was not reshot, Bogart's classic line "Louis, I think this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship," which is heard in a voice-over, was added afterwards in a sound studio.
