Q. Did Bette Davis really turn down the lead in The African Queen (1951)?
A. Bette actually had three opportunities to make the film. It was first offered to her in 1938, with David Niven in the Bogart role. It was offered to her again in 1947, with James Mason as her co-star, but she was pregnant and couldn't do it. She tried once more in 1949, but by then Katharine Hepburn had the part sewed up. John Mills was considered as her co-star, but Bogart finally got it, and won his only Oscar.
