Q. Is it true that a stuntman died during filming of the chariot race sequence in the 1959 version of Ben-Hur?
A. No, and no reputable sources, including Heston himself, confirm this story. Stunt coordinator Yakima Canutt's son Joe, doubling for Heston, received a gash on his chin requiring four stitches when he was flipped out of chariot, and the scene was used in the final print. However, an actor did die during the filming of the 1926 silent version, according to Francis X. Bushman, who played Mesalla. It was also rumored that a number of horses were killed during the making of that film.
