Q. Was Buddy Ebsen originally cast as the Tin Woodsman in The Wizard of Oz (1939)?
A. Ray Bolger was actually the first choice for the part, but he asked to play the Scarecrow instead, and Buddy Ebsen was cast in his place. Unfortunately, Buddy, who began his career as a dancer and probably would have made a fine Tin Woodsman, had an allergic reaction to the aluminum powder used in his costume, and ended up seriously ill, in the hospital for two weeks, and recuperating for another month after that. He was replaced by Jack Haley, but he recorded many of his songs before shooting began, and his voice can be heard on "We're Off to See the Wizard."
