Jim Emerson's stylish tribute to film noir was never completed (it was scheduled to be finished in 1999), but is well worth visiting as it now stands. Click on the "archetypes" in the home page photo for explanations of what they mean.

Subtitled "Film Noir and the Femme Fatale," this is another great subsection of Michael Mills' ModernTimes site, focusing on Lana Turner, Jane Greer, Barbara Stanwyck, and other examples of that often fatal breed.

A long one-page site, consisting of a tongue-in-cheek illustrated essay by William Preston Robertson, excerpted from "The Big Lebowski: The Making of a Coen Brothers Film."

Pitfall (1948)
Lizabeth Scott is Dick Powell's "pitfall" in this classic noir film which also stars Jane Wyatt and Raymond Burr. A site by Ron Hunt, not updated in a long time.

An excellent four-part essay by film writer/journalist Brian W. Fairbanks, exploring the origins of the style in the 40s and 50s, and its reappearance in later films such as Chinatown and Farewell, My Lovely.

The Ultimate Gangster and Crime Film Web Site
Nice-looking site includes a comprehensive list of gangster and crime films, including a separate listing of Prohibition films, a bibliography, poster collection, and listing of actors who appeared in the films. A must reference source for crime film fans.
