Classic Movies

Film Societies/Festivals

Web sites for film festivals, groups and theaters devoted to the showing of old and hard-to-locate movies.

Alex Film Society
A showcase group for classic films operating from the historic Alex Theater in Glendale, California.

The Austin Film Society
The nationally-respected group from Austin, Texas presents themed film series, such as this summer's tribute to Universal horror films like The Mummy and Bride of Frankenstein.

Basement Films
The St. Andrews University Art-House Film Society, located in Scotland, offers a mix of current and classic films.

Bath University Film Society
This student film society in the UK shows a range of films, including classics. Most listings include illustrated reviews by Isobel Stark.

Bradford-On-Avon Film Society
Web site for the group in Wiltshire, Britain, a two-time winner of the British Film Society of the Year award, which also publishes a quarterly magazine.

Canterbury Film Society
This 45-year-old society's mission is to screen interesting films (foreign films in particular) which would not otherwise be seen in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Cheltenham Film Society
The 53-year-old film society in the UK shows primarily "newish" films with the occasional classic.

Cinecon
Home page for the annual Labor Day classic film festival and memorabilia show, being held this year from August 30 through September 3, 2001 at the historic Hollywood Roosevelt, at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard, with screenings in the Lloyd E. Rigler Theatre at the newly-restored Grauman's Egyptian on Hollywood Boulevard. (If the site doesn't come up, wait a while and try again.)

Edinburgh University Film Society
Winner of the 1997 British Film Society of the Year award, EUFS has a very nice site which includes reviews of films shown during the past few years.

Enzian Film Society
Located in Central Florida, USA, Enzian shows primarily current alternative films.

Filmfestivals.com
As advertised, this site is devoted to news about film festivals all over the world, many of which are devoted fully or partly to classics. The site also offers thoughtful reviews and services for professionals.

Great Basin Film Society
A non-profit group of movie lovers from Nevada whose mission is to complement Reno's film scene with art, independent and classic films not readily available on home video.

The Great Lakes Cinephile Society
Located in Michigan, the Society sponsors an annual Cinesation festival to promote silents and early talkies, held in a theater. This year's Cinesation takes place in Massillon, Ohio, and features an excellent program. You can also purchase silent films on VHS or DVD. All proceeds benefit film restoration.

Inside Film Online
A great directory of film festivals and screenwriting events all over the world, plus news, books, articles, and links of interest to filmmakers and fans.

The International Silent Film Festival, Forssa, Finland
While you may not be in a position to travel to Finland this summer, you'll definitely want to visit this imaginative site and at least enjoy the introductory animation and the "Cinema" page, which tells the story of the first moving picture theatre in Finland, recently renovated for this festival.

Hobart Film Society Inc.
A simple site for the Australian film society located in Hobart, Tasmania, but a very interesting program of films.

Jersey Film Society
The archives include a very impressive list of films shown during the past fifty years by this venerable British film society.

Film Society of Greater Kansas City
A film society located in Missouri. The extensive site includes information about their film festivals, discussion groups, and other activities. Some pages were under construction when we visited.

Keele University Film Society
Home page of the student film society at Keele University in the UK, which offers primarily newer films.

Lancaster University Film Society
This student film society in the UK is one of the largest in the world, and shows a mix of old and new films, plus some premiers.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center
Take your choice: the New York Film Festival, the New York Video Festival, the annual Galas, Film Comment Magazine, and the daily schdule of mostly classic films at the Walter Reade Theater.

Manchester University Film Society
Voted the UK's Best Student Film Society the last two years, with 50+ years of history behind it, MUFS has an extensive schedule of mixed newer and older films, with short reviews.

The Miami Film Festival
Site for FIA, the group that sponsors the Miami Film Festival, held in late January and early February. Includes retrospectives.

Napier University Film Society
Web site for the film society located in Edinburgh, Scotland, which features mostly newer films, but some classics from time to time.

Port Townsend Film Festival
Film society located in Washington state near Seattle which sponsors a yearly film festival.

San Francisco Film Society
Nice-looking Web site for the Society, founded in 1957, which presents the San Francisco International Film Festival, the oldest in the Americas.

The San Francisco Silent Film Festival
Home page of the Festival which takes place annually in July, but which is now focused on their special presentation of the rediscovered Rudolph Valentino/Gloria Swanson love story Beyond the Rocks (1922), which will take place on Sunday, November 13 at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco.

Stanford Film Society
Home page of the film society at Stanford University in California.

Toronto Film Society
This Canadian group shows both old and new films on Sundays and Mondays, in addition to holding seminars.

Trowbridge Film Society
The UK film society's program includes classics (Dr. Strangelove and The Magnificent Seven were included in a recent listing), documentaries, contemporary, and foreign films.

Virginia Festival Film Society
Home of the group which runs the annual Virginia Festival of American Film at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, which includes classic and contemporary films.

Winslow Film Festival
This annual four-day festival is held in October at (where else?) the Rialto Theatre in Winslow, Arizona (remember the Eagles' song about standing on the corner there?). Features films from all genres, though mostly of current vintage.
