History of Classic Movies

While the "history" of film is what we're all about here, these sites focus specifically on historical issues, such as early film equipment or influential people in the industry.

Classic Movies History Articles
A collection of articles written by me that examine the history of Hollywood's Golden Age, including articles about African-Americans in Hollywood, classic TV stars in the movies, film burning, the blacklist, and much more.

The Greatest Films Best of the Net
An amazing site featuring plot synopses of 100 great films, plus a listing of even more movies by year, with summaries of the film history of each decade. Expect to get lost in the decade of your choice.

Air Combat, Hollywood Style
From Arnold van Beverhout's Sandcastle V.I. site, here's an interesting look at movies featuring air combat footage, from WWI to the Persian Gulf.

American Memory Collections: Motion Pictures
The movie section of the Library of Congress' National Digital Library Program includes multimedia collections of digitized documents, photographs, recorded sound, moving pictures, and text from the Library's Americana collections.

Biograph
Originally founded as the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company, the revived studio, now located in Los Angeles, has a long and distinguished history. Read about that history, and find out what they're doing today, on this relocated site.

The Bitch Brigade
Stu Kobak of Films on Disc has a new article that may ruffle a few feathers, but makes for fun reading, as he inducts actresses from Barbara Stanwyck to Sharon Stone into the "bitch brigade."

Black Film Center/Archive
From Indiana University, this site contains information about the research archive of films and related materials by and about African Americans, on both film and videotape.

Blonde Bimbos of the Big Screen
From Jean Harlow to Marilyn Monroe. Another entertaining essay by Stu Kobak of Films on Disc.

British Feature Film Locations
"Reel Streets" is devoted to British film locations - places where films were made in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, from the 1920s to the 1980s. You'll find directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Alexander Korda, David Lean, Joseph Losey and Michael Powell mentioned here, as well as studios such as Ealing Films, J Arthur Rank, Denham, Pinewood and Elstree. A feast for the anglophile cinephile!

British Films of the 30s, 40s, and 50s
David Absalom loves British films, and it shows in this interesting and well-written site. Look for lots of interesting bits about films and stars that you might have missed, even if you're English.

Buckey's Film History, Preservation, Conservation, and Resources Page
The name pretty much says it all. Buckey Grimm provides information on various aspects of film history, with monthly articles, news, guest commentary, etc.

Celluloid Skyline
Web site for the fascinating book by James Sanders which looks at the two New Yorks -- the real one, and the one from the movies. Of particular interest of classic film fans is the selected filmography, an alphabetical listing of films featuring the city, from "Adam's Rib" to "Ziegfeld Girl." (Click on "Special Features.")

A Centennial Salute to Cinema
From History in the News, information from an exhibition produced by the Photographic History Collection at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

Coop and Papa
Official site for the upcoming documentary entitled "Cooper and Hemingway: The True Gen," chronicling the 35-year relationship between the liberal novelist and the conservative actor who appeared in two films based on Papa's works, but who also had a fascinating off-screen history.

E!Online 100 Years
Subtitled "the brightest stars and biggest moments of the 20th Century," this attractive effort inclues brief stories grouped into six categories: Sex symbols, love affairs, fashion, scandals, heartthrobs, and fads. Not all of it relates to classics, but there's enough to make visiting here worth your while.

Early Cinema
An introduction to the first decade of motion pictures; includes a timeline covering the years 1827 to 1905, biographies of the important pioneers, descriptions of the key early technologies, an extensive A to Z list of people and things related to the topic, a bibliography, and several essays. A Films section is currently under development.

Film Genres
Another of the many features of Tim Dirks' Greatest Films site, this time dealing with all those sub-categories of films, from Action to Westerns, from Adventure to War.

Film History by Decade
Tim Dirks' Film History section of his Greatest Films site is a comprehensive rundown of the history of Hollywood filmmaking from the early days in the pre-1920s up to the 1990s.

Film: Research and Resources
University of Minnesota Professor Robert E. Yahnke presents several studies, including a cinema history "work in progress" covering the period from silent films through the 60s, plus a new links section.

History in Film
Created by John Woggen, a teacher in Greenville, SC, the basic idea was to provide a version of a World History class that took advantage of popular films that deal with history, with a Web site that would give students a place on the Internet to review the films shown in class.

Hollywood and the Medal of Honor
Lyle F. Padilla (Major, Armor, US Army Reserve) and Raymond J. Castagnaro (Lt Col, US Air Force Reserve) have put together an interesting site focusing on how Hollywood has dealt with Congressional Medal of Honor winners, from the Andrews Raiders to Alvin York, plus some who were missed or who didn't get the award for one reason or another. Classic fans will enjoy their comments on Pearl Harbor.

The Hollywood Blacklist
Article by Dan Georgakas, with sub-sections on Dalton Trumbo, Elia Kazan, and others.

Hollywood Renegades Archive
The story of SIMPP -- the Society of Independent Motion Picture Producers -- a group which included Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, Samuel Goldwyn, Alexander Korda, Mary Pickford, David O. Selznick, Walter Wanger, and Orson Welles, who formed it to stand in contrast to the studio system. The Hollywood Renegades Archive has evolved into a huge database of information and original documents on such topics as the origin of film, the rise of the studios, the development of the independent movement, and the status of the entertainment industry.

The Hollywood Thirties
Gary Jackson offers a fascinating history of the 1930s in Hollywood, with a focus on his favorite films, actors, and actresses. Lots of photos and posters to illustrate the overviews of each year during the decade.

The Jazz Age
Dedicated to the Jazz Age music of the 1920s and to the artists who performed the music.

The Life of a City: Early Films of New York
One of many excellent sections of the Library of Congress' American Memory collection Web site. The collection consists of forty-five films made by the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company and the Edison Company in New York from 1898-1906.

Monster at the Soda Shop
From the latest issue of images magazine: Cyndy Hendershot takes a look at the monster movies of the 50s and their relationship to the iconic teenagers of that fabled decade, concluding that the films provide "a glimpse into the insanity at the heart of many Fifties authority figures... much more terrifying than juvenile delinquency could ever be."

Movie Theaters
Devoted to Web sites with a passion for the great picture palaces and drive-in theaters in America and all over the world.

National Film Preservation Foundation
Home page of the nonprofit organization created by Congress to save America's film heritage. Had been operating on private donations, but was recently awarded $1 million from the federal government.

Oscar Winners
This section of Tim Dirks' site, The Greatest Films, includes writeups on all the major Academy Award winners for each decade

Taylorology
A newsletter focusing on the unsolved murder of William Desmond Taylor, a Hollywood director who was shot to death in 1922. But there's a lot more here, including material on Charlie Chaplin, Roscoe Arbuckle, Lillian Gish, Harold Lloyd, Rudolph Valentino, and Mary Pickford. For the true film buff.

Through a Lens Obliquely
Another new article from Films on Disc's Stu Kobak, who takes a thoughtful look at how Hollywood looks at itself, in films such as The Bad and the Beautiful, Singin' in the Rain, and A Star is Born.

Tighsolas
A site created by Dorothy Nixon about a family in Richmond, Quebec 1908-1913, using their letters and providing historical background to this very pivotal era in history. The movie connection? Richmond is the home town of Mack Sennett, and 1908-1913 are the years D. W. Griffith made his silent shorts.

Twists, Slugs, and Roscoes: A Dictionary of Hardboiled Slang
William Denton has compiled an extensive glossary without which you'll be lost watching many of the film noir classics. Besides, it's fun to read.
