Classic Movies

Miscellaneous One-of-a-Kind Sites

Anything about classic movies that doesn't fit into the other categories, including many amazing one-of-a-kind sites.

Miscellaneous Classic Movies Feature Articles
A potpourri of articles, from favorite sound files to streaming video to a tribute to Gene Siskel.

The American Magic-Lantern Theater
Web site for the touring company based in East Haddam, Connecticut that is North America's only professional troupe recreating Victorian "Magic-Lantern Shows" -- a popular Victorian combination of projected pictures, live dramatic narration, live music, comedy, and audience participation. Includes FAQs, schedules, players, and repertoires.

Card Boulevard Movie Cards
Movie-themed electronic greeting cards from Card Boulevard include The Wizard of Oz and Casablanca.

Cinemorgue
If you've ever wondered if a particular actor or actress' character died in a certain movie, this is the place at which to find the answer. That there is a major spoiler alert for this site should go without saying.

Classic Film Keepers
This fascinating site from Meredith Leonard allows individuals to become the official "keepers" of items, situations, quotes, or even feelings from their favorite classic films.

Classic Movie News Briefs
Elizabeth's Reel Classics site offers brief reports on news items of interest to classic movie fans, with appropriate links. With archives for 1997 and 1998.

Ebony Showcase Theatre Online
Web site for the non-profit Los Angeles Theatre and Cultural Arts Center founded by Nick Stewart (Lightnin' of Amos 'n' Andy and Brer Bear from Song of the South) and Edna Stewart in 1950. A lot of good information here, much of it related to classic film.

Famous Locations
Thousands of listings and photos of locations for movies both classic and current on this English site. Scroll down to see the list and click on the thumbnails for larger photos.

Filmnummers
Though I suspect this is supposed to be called Film "Numbers," the important thing is that this is a list of most of the MPAA certificate numbers assigned to films since 1934, beginning with Number 1, and continuing up to the present day (42379 as this is being written). There are a few gaps, and you are invited to email the site's creator if you can fill them in.

Firsties! The Actors List
From the creator of "The Invisible Hand of Alan Smithee" comes this extensive list of actors' first appearances in films, credited or uncredited. The author says it's just on the site to lend legitimacy to the other "nonsense," but we know better.

Fred Shops
Fred Sawyers offers movie fans a private shopper service for the Web. For a 10% finders fee plus postage, he'll look for a film on VHS or DVD, a piece of memorabilia (poster, photo, autograph, magazine, etc.), or an auction item for you.

Hollywood Goes Racing
An entertaining rundown on films with auto racing themes, from 1932's The Crowd Roars to some films from the 90s. From Sandcastle V.I.

The Hollywood Legends
Web page for biographer, historian, screenwriter and playwright Michael B. Druxman, whose one-person, two-act plays explore the lives of Clara Bow, Al Jolson, Maurice Chevalier, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Carole Lombard, Errol Flynn, and Orson Welles.

Hollywood on the Sidelines
Stu Kobak of Films on Disc has put together an interesting essay on how sports coaches have been portrayed in Hollywood over the years, from Knute Rockne to Al Pacino's latest. Just one of the many feature articles you'll enjoy on this site.

Hoosierwood
Hoosiers with Hollywood connections, part of Mark Kratzner's site devoted to the great state of Indiana. What's a Hoosier? "Someone who was born, raised, educated, and/or worked for a period of time in Indiana, USA."

Jewish Movies, From Cinerhama
A history of Jewish cinema, a list of Jewish movies, slightly Jewish movies, and movies with Jewish characters, a directory of Jewish actors and directors, and more.

Finnish Hollywood
Subtitled "Finns in Hollywood and Hollywood in Finland," this site celebrates the influence of people from Finland on Hollywood movies through the years, such as they are.

Juggling in Movies
Here's a list of 388 films, almost half made prior to the 1980s, which contain juggling scenes, courtesy of the Juggling Information Service. The listings include title, year of release, main cast, plot summary, juggling descriptions, photos, and links to more information for each movie.

Meet the Moms!
Another entertaining new feature from Divas - The Site, focusing on the mothers (most of them stage mothers) of famous women, from Agnes (Karen Carpenter) to Wilhelmina (Marlene Dietrich).

Michelle Vogel
Home page for author Michelle Vogel, whose specialty is Hollywood biographies. Listen to the audio message, then be sure to scroll down for more about her latest book, a bio of Gene Tierney. Her future release is entitled Children of Hollywood, with recollections from the children and grandchildren of The Marx Brothers (all three), Abbott and Costello, Harry Langdon, Harold Lloyd, W.C. Fields, John Gilbert, Eddie Cantor, Tyrone Power, Glenn Ford, Boris Karloff, and others.

Movie Filler.com
This company distributes free downloadable tickets to advanced movie screenings in Los Angeles, allowing lucky residents of that area to see movies before they are released to the general public.

Movie Pooper
Why would somebody put up a site whose purpose is to tell you the endings and key plot twists of dozens of classic and current films? Visit and find out!

MovieJuice
Roger Ebert ranked this site as one of the top five "Online Movie Outlaws." While the classic content is somewhat slim on this satirical site, Mark Ramsay's favorite movies include It's a Wonderful Life and the Alistair Sim version of A Christmas Carol. 'Nuff said.

The Nitpickers Site
Those of you who watch your favorites over and over again will definitely appreciate this huge repository of mistakes, anomolies, and continuity errors in films, many of them older ones. You can also register and submit some of your own.

Northern Stars
Subtitled "The Canadian History of Hollywood," this site focuses on actors, actresses, and directors who hail from the Great North, going back to Deanna Durbin and other early movers and shakers. You're invited to make suggestions, as well.

Pacific Northwest Movies
A group of sites with listings of films featuring locations in Northern California, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Alaska, and Wyoming. A project of Scott Trimble, a movie location manager, location scout, production manager, and production coordinator.

Things Found in Films
From Stuart Bayens' Last Link on the Left site, here's a great collection of sites that have to do with "things" in movies, including cliches (its own special section), plus other oddball items such as bagpipes, hearses, staplers and stuttering. I don't usually link to lists of links, but I'm making an exception in this case!

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Movies
Myths and legends about films, actors, and movie-related events, from Barbara and David P. Mikkelson, maintained by the San Fernando Valley Folklore Society.

Visions in Black and White
Meredy's stylish offering for fans of classic black and white films includes stills from dozens of the greatest films of the genre, from Adam's Rib to You Can't Take it With You.

"Will this year's films become classics?"
Philip French's article in the March 5, 2006 Observer discusses the whole question of what today constitutes (and in the past constituted) a "classic," and expresses some attitudes similar to ours.
