Music & Soundtracks

Web sites dedicated to classic movie music, soundtracks, lyrics, and film scores.

Colony Music
Web site for the New York City music store offers CDs, sheet music, karaoke tapes, posters, videos, and memorabilia. Plus chat, a weekly trivia quiz, and "artist finder."

Film Music on the Web (UK)
A British site featuring soundtrack and film score composer profiles, articles, music CD reviews and sales.

Film Music Review
Roger Hall is a singer, composer, and musicologist whose Music Buffs Web site includes this regularly updated section devoted to film composers, including news, CD and DVD reviews, articles, and listings of the best film music scores of the 20th century.

Film Score Monthly.com
Lukas Kendall's "Online Magazine of Motion Picture and Television Music Appreciation" looks great and has lots of info, including a way for you to search for that film score you've always wanted to find.

Film Sound Design
Literally everything you ever wanted to know about sound on film, and then some. Definitions, discussions, and bibliography. Of particular interest is an article on the early history of film sound.

Jan's 78 rpm Record Warehouse
As mentioned in our last set of Best New Links, Jan Hovers offers you six "floors" of RealAudio recordings of 78 rpm records, most of which will be of great interest to classic film fans -- including Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Deanna Durbin, Charles Chaplin, and more.

MFiles
A site which began as a way to share classical music files, its aim today is to "bridge the divide" between classical and film music, and to build a catalogue of sheet music, MIDI files and MP3 files, along with articles, reviews and reference material about composers and their music.

MusicNotes.com
A commercial site that offers thousands of pieces of "digital sheet music" from Warner Bros. Publishing and Mel Bay Publications, as well as a catalog of tens of thousands of traditional printed music titles. This link takes you directly to the movies section.

Past Perfect
Digitally remastered music from the 20s, 30s, and 40s, including Frank Sinatra, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and more.

Score, Baby! - A guide to cult movie soundtracks of the 60s, 70s, and beyond, with reviews of a wide variety of music, along with LP cover photos and more. Most MP3 samples have been removed, but you can contact the Webmaster if there's something you want to hear.

Screen Archives Entertainment
A great online source of hard-to-find movie soundtrack recordings. You can also listen to streaming audio of movie music in the new Soundtrack Cafe.

Silent Film Music
Experience the thrill of the early silents with new music by Donald Sosin and Joanna Seaton. On this site you'll find samples, performance schedules, links to purchase their work, and more.

The Soundtrack Price Guide
If you're a collector of movie soundtracks and scores, you'll like this way to track prices from various internet auction sites, making it the only online filmscore price guide.

Three Monkeys Music & Movies
The emphasis here is on the music, with a great selection of the kind of stuff that appeals to classic film fans, vintage artists from the 20s to the 50s, including Armstrong, Belafonte, Darin, Ellington, Holiday, Orbison and Sinatra.

Todd's Cole Porter Lyrics Page
A great collection of Cole Porter lyrics by Todd Peach, from "Ace in the Hole" to "You're the Top." There's also a biography. Click on the Home Page link for other lyrics collections.

Todd's Frank Sinatra Lyrics Page
Not only was Frank one of the best actors in Hollywood, but the guy could sing a little bit, too. Todd Peach has collected the lyrics to over 900 classic Sinatra songs, from "Accentuate the Positive" to "Zip-a-Dee-Do-Dah."

Yaporos
Steven Hill's soundtrack review site covers both current and classic films, with a list of his favorite soundtracks and composers, plus a source of hard-to-find sountracks, in addition to a little more than two dozen formal reviews.
