Classic Movies

New on DVD This Week - September 26, 2006

DraculaDracula (75th Anniversary Edition) (1931) - After starring in the title role on Broadway, Bela Lugosi became forever identified with the bloodsucking count in director Tod Browning's Gothic film adaptation. Follow Dracula from his Transylvanian castle to England as he ensnares the unwary in his diabolical schemes. With Dwight Frye, Helen Chandler, Edward Van Sloan. This two-disc set also includes the Spanish version of "Dracula," filmed (appropriately) at night on the same Universal sets as the Lugosi film being made simultaneously. Stars Lupita Tovar, Carmen Guerrero, and Carlos Villarias in the title role. 179 min. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish.

FrankensteinFrankenstein (75th Anniversary Edition) (1931) - One of the all-time chillers. Boris Karloff became a screen legend for his portrayal of the monster brought to life by mad scientist Colin Clive. With Mae Clarke, Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan; restored version contains scenes not shown since the film's original release (how did that girl get in the lake?). 71 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish. Two-disc set.

Maurice ChevalierMaurice Chevalier: A Song In My Heart (2006) - With his melodic voice and smooth manner, Maurice Chevalier became one of America's favorite Frenchmen during his celebrated career. You'll say "thank heaven" for Chevalier in this program that focuses on the singer/actor's life and work, including appearances in such films as "The Love Parade," "The Big Pond," "Love in the Afternoon," and, of course, "Gigi." 59 min. Soundtracks: English, French.

Humphrey Bogart - The Signature Collection, Vol. 2 - Court-martialed U.S. Army officer Humphrey Bogart takes passage on a ship bound for Japan and learns of a plot to blow up the Panama Canal in the John Huston WWII espionage thriller Across the Pacific (1942). Mary Astor and Sydney Greenstreet co-star. Also, a search for the missing baker of his favorite cheesecake leads New York gambler Bogart into battle against Nazi spies All Through the Night (1942), with Kaaren Verne, Peter Lorre and Conrad Veidt. Action in the North Atlantic (1943) is a hearty salute to the unsung WWII heroics of the Merchant Marines, as first mate Bogart and captain Raymond Massey dodge U-boats to deliver supplies to Russia. And a band of Devil's Island escapees joins up with Free French sailors to fight for their occupied homeland in Passage to Marseille (1944). Bogart, Lorre, Greenstreet, and Claude Rains star. Also includes the special edition of Bogie's 1941 private eye opus, The Maltese Falcon (which includes 1931's The Maltese Falcon and 1936's Satan Met a Lady, both without Bogart). 9 hrs. total on seven discs. Standard; Soundtrack: English. (Added October 3.) And be sure to check out Humphrey Bogart - The Signature Collection, Vol. 1, as well!
