Citizen Kane Special Edition: Masterpiece Finally Comes to DVD
Released in late September of 2001, Warner's 60th anniversary DVD version of Citizen Kane is long overdue, but well worth waiting for. The digital transfer is fantastic, and will be particularly impressive to those who have only seen it on broadcast TV. The Dolby Digital soundtrack results in good clarity, though Warner chose (wisely) to stick with mono, rather than trying to do a stereo remix. The extra features include commentaries by Roger Ebert and Peter Bogdanovich, an extensive gallery of stills, and the excellent 1995 PBS documentary, "The Battle Over Citizen Kane." While the latter was already available in its own DVD version, it's a real advantage to have it paired with the film itself. This one's a total winner, a must-own DVD.
First release on DVD of a film that is often cited as the greatest of all time.
Directed by and starring the legendary Orson Welles.
2-disc set contains many extras, including the Oscar-nominated PBS documentary, "The Battle Over Citizen Kane."
The bottom line: This is a DVD that should be in every collection. It has no real downsides.
